7 tactics that will help you squeeze every drop out of your business

In previous blog posts, we explained why you need to master your mindset and strategy before you concentrate on tactics that can move your business forward.

After you’ve reinvented your mindset and identified your strategic position in business,  it is time to move onto tactics.

Tactics are the trade craft of entrepreneurs. They are the skills you must master and apply in order to be in business in the first place.

 

In this blog post, you will find a whole series of tactics that we drill through in detail at the Sage Business School. So get yourself a pen and a piece of a paper and write these down as I go through them. Why? Because I’m going to give you a very interesting exercise at the end that will allow you to apply some of what we teach. This will make you far more effective in terms of your use of time time and your focus.

  1.       Time Management – Knowing how to manage yourself in relation to time, rather than trying to manage time on its own.

Understanding how to train your staff to bring you solutions rather than problems has a massive impact on your own personal time management.

Realising the importance of turning off push notifications so you’re not a walking doorbell.

How not to run your company by “have-a-minute?” meetings and ensure you’ll always be smarter and more organised, rather than having a no fixed time schedule.

Learning how to train your staff is a skill that has to be mastered. Otherwise, you’re going to be busy being busy for the rest of your business life.

  1.       Customer service – How do you transform your clients into your best sales force? Make them raving fans, not brand terrorists.

Brand terror is what you don’t want in a world where you can now be very close to having a business taken down through reputation because of the interconnectivity of social media and the voice of the public.

Whether it’s on TripAdvisor or Trustpilot – doesn’t matter.  You’re exposed at all times to the will of your customers and whether or not they appreciate what you do for them.

This can impact your business way more than traditional marketing, and makes understanding the art of customer service key in “wowing” your customers.

How do you train your staff to hunt for opportunities to impress? The answer can make or break your business.

  1.       Hiring – If you want to see an area where business owners fall down, it’s acquiring the skill of effective hiring.

Most business owners are too busy trying to plug holes in their ship by grabbing somebody who has a good resume; yet they don’t really understand the concept of a “team fit.”

So, what are the three most important questions you need to ask when hiring somebody?

a)   The first is, can they do the job? In other words, do they have the skill set to be able to do it? Are they qualified for the position? If not, then the doors are closed.

But here’s the problem: most business owners think, “Well, if they can answer that question then they’re qualified to do it, so I’ll hire them.” Unfortunately, they don’t ask the other two questions.

b)   The second question is, do they want to do the job? If they’re not passionate about sharing their gift, then you don’t want that person. Just because they happen to have a particular skill set, doesn’t mean their heart is in it.

They will bring negative energy to the team, and just because they can tick a box doesn’t mean that they’re going to add value to your organization. They can do the job, but do they actually want to?

c)   The third question is, are they a team fit? Maybe they’re highly qualified and love doing what they do, but how do they fit into the profile or culture of the company?

If they’re a bad apple in your organization, if their energy brings people down, or if they simply have a different communication style that rubs people the wrong way, then some of the key people in your team are going to fall out. There will be a ripple effect, which will cause waves in your business that you don’t have time to deal with.

  1.       Outsourcing – Most businesses outsource based on whether they can do the job and what the price is. This is the fast track for creating a lot of problems in your business.

What is the key to successful outsourcing? Being able to design yourself out of the equation and leverage your business success through outsourcing that doesn’t cause more headaches than it solves.

  1.       Negotiation – How do you negotiate on a win-win basis? And how do you make sure that when you’re positioning a deal sheet, when you’re really getting down to the nuts and bolts … are the other party assuming the risks or is the risk that you’re assuming at least partially protected when it comes to selecting the deal?

  1.       Business partners – Choosing a business partner can be the best or the worst decision you ever make. How do you align a business partnership so that both parties see the upside? It could be capital, it could be experience, it could be extra time, it could be a synergy of different skill sets etc., but without the downside that we all know, and that I have have certainly experienced many times.

A lot of weddings that start with the best vows and the best intentions can end in really ugly divorce. So how do you prevent that? How do you align the values and visions of business partners? How do you set it up so that you have permission to talk about stuff in advance that can potentially lead you both down great paths?

  1.       Educating your clients in terms of marketing – Marketing, especially internet marketing, is absolutely key. If you don’t understand internet marketing, you can waste a ton of money fast, especially if you’re not an expert.

In fact, you need to know how to spot an expert rather than someone that’s done a three-day internet marketing course and thinks that they can be in charge of your advertising budget.

Knowing which questions to ask to separate the people who want to use your business as an opportunity to gain experience from those that are truly qualified to help you out and get them into your team with a package that makes them feel as if they’re tied in. All of the above are tried-and-true tactics that every business owner has to master.

Now what I’m going to invite you to do is rank all of the different tactics that we have focused on.

Here is the qualifying question I want to ask right now: Which one of these, if you were going to focus only on one, would have the biggest impact on moving your business forward?

Because as an entrepreneur, you’re never going to have enough time to do everything. That’s just part of the game. So we’ve got to learn to focus effectively on what it is that we spend our time on, and right now we have an opportunity to do that.

List all of the key tactics that we covered in detail at the business school write down now which one of those in order and sequence would give me the biggest bang for my buck when it comes to investing my time and building my business. Otherwise you’re just going to be spread way too thin.

Now I’ll give you a final metaphor to take away from this post. Just imagine…

You take a megaphone or bull horn, something you speak to a crowd with. You put the small end of the megaphone up to your mouth, and the large end amplifies your voice over a wide area. All the people hear it, but it’s not very distinct. This is how many business owners are running their business. They’re trying to do a little bit of everything.

But if you took that megaphone, turned it around, put the big end over your mouth, and the small end in somebody’s ear, you would blow out their eardrum. You would harness that sound into a concentrated boom, and make a big difference in one particular area.

That’s what this exercise will do for you right now, so write down all of the tactics. Turn the megaphone around, and point the small end where it will give you the most impact. It’s going to blow out the eardrum of your business in a good way and allow you to leverage your time.

    • I always look people in the eye and smile. When I was young, I was very shy and often would not speak to those I didn’t recognize. My mother would make me speak and tell me it was rude not to acknowledge people. So it has been ingrained in me now. I notice that when I smile, it gives others the freedom to also smile and speak. I have also meet some interesting people this way. I honestly don’t notice pee7lo&#821p;s eye color so I think I should be more purposeful with my contact.
